The People’s National Congress membership crisis seems to be deepening following the fracas at the party’s regional conference.
National Executive of the Guyana Youth and Student Movement, Wayne Mason, yesterday in an interview with this newspaper blasted the party leader Robert Corbin.
Mason chided Corbin for the manner in which he handled the situation last Sunday following which a GYSM member was suspended, charged and placed before the courts for common assault.
Mason however is contending that Corbin’s handling of the affair leaves much to be desired, given that the party’s constitution was not adhered to.
The GYSM member said that Corbin unilaterally suspended Benjamin when he was supposed to be placed before the party’s disciplinary committee.
Mason contends, too, that the woman who was allegedly attacked by Benjamin, and Volda Lawrence who allegedly chased after Benjamin with a large stick with the intention of hurting him, should have also been disciplined.
Mason is of the opinion that Lawrence’s behaviour was unbecoming of such a high ranking member of the party and that she should also be brought before the disciplinary committee.
He said that the committee was established for just such an occasion when disgruntled members could have their grievances handled within the party and not be aired in the public, which Corbin did when he made a public statement.
The PNCR, in a statement to the media on Monday, confirmed reports of a physical altercation between an elderly woman and a GYSM member, Sherwin Benjamin.
That statement said that the Disciplinary Committee of the Party would expeditiously deal with this matter and that the matter has also been reported to the Police and criminal action would be pursued.
The statement also stated that the PNCR Leader, Corbin, “using the power vested in the Leader by the constitution, announced the immediate suspension of Sherwin Benjamin as member of the PNCR until the hearing and determination of Sunday’s incident.”
Mason is contending that Corbin has no such power under the Constitution of the party.
“The party has a code of conduct and the disciplinary committee was put in place in 2007…The disciplinary committee should have met.”
Mason is contending that the party’s business should not have reached the court because the disciplinary committee caters for such affairs.
This, he said, was in the context of the 2011 elections and preserving the image of the party in that such state of affairs could ruin the perception of the party.
“As a GYSM youth I am disappointed with the leader of the party,” said Mason. “Corbin did not consult anyone, he went on his own and acted.”
The GYSM member also chided the other senior officials, including Dr Richard Van West Charles and Oscar Clarke, and Corbin as well, pointing to the fact that they by way of inaction condoned the derogatory heckling that led to the alleged assault.
“They were there and they did nothing about it.”
