– $247M was budgeted
A multi-million-dollar upgrade on a taxiway at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) was delayed after authorities expressed concerns over the quality of work there.
Kaieteur News understands that contract to upgrade the taxiway and apron was awarded to contractor, BK International, to the tune of $247M.
In January, there was a media tour of the CJIA during which Minister of Public Works and Transport, Robeson Benn, had expressed concerns about the unevenness of the taxiway.
However, Engineer Consultant, Giuseppe Caraubba, had said then, that to bring the taxiway to a desired level would require much more money and work.
He said that he was only hired to take off two inches from the taxiway and then recap it.
Sources told Kaieteur News that airport and the Ministry’s officials have since expressed disappointment on the actual upgrading works and this was conveyed to BK International.
The company has since, reportedly, agreed to “do more work” to address the concerns, an official told this newspaper.
Contacted earlier this week for a comment, BK International officials referred this newspaper to the supervisor of the works, a “Mr Kandasammy”, who was unavailable.
