Flooding in the Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara area is caused by fishing boats preventing access to the canal’s koker to facilitate desilting work, says Local Government Minister Kellawan Lall.
Water has lodged in residents’ yards, posing a danger to the health of the residents especially the children. Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Kellawan Lall, visited the area this afternoon to assess the impact of the flooding.
He stated that the boats cannot remain in the canal and advised that the fishermen meet with the Minister of Agriculture to come to a permanent solution.
Desilting of the canal is an urgent matter since heavy rainfall would cause more flooding in the area. The fishing boats are expected to evacuate the area tonight so that a pontoon can access the canal to desilt it.
By yesterday, machinery was there clearing the canal.
Government is making continuous investments to facilitate the repair and cleaning of canals countrywide to facilitate proper drainage.
