– 21 teams registered for event
The Annual Beepat’s Scorpions Inter-Organisation Basketball tournament will jump off at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Wednesday with 21 organisations already registered for the event and more slated to do so today and tomorrow.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Beepat’s Scorpions’ Head Coach, Vijay Panday said that with 21 teams already confirmed, the event this year is on course to become the biggest they have held in its three-year history.
“When we started three years ago, we only had 10 teams; last year we double that with 20 teams and this year we already have 21 teams confirmed to play with more slated to come in before Wednesday when we start” Panday indicated.
The long-standing Scorpions’ Coach revealed that registration for the competition closes at 9:00am Wednesday. He said that preparations to host the usually well-attended basketball event are well on stream with minor areas left to cover.
Panday informed that they will be basically targeting more advertising ahead of the event that is geared at targeting players within organisations that do not get opportunities to play ‘ball’ because of conflicting work hours etc.
In addition, the club had initially set out the competition as a family day out for employed basketball players to demonstrate that there are playing opportunities after players turn to the professional community for their personal livelihoods.
“This is also in keeping with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, fit for life event, which we know the Minister (Dr. Frank Anthony) has always been stressing,” the Coach added, before listing the teams that are confirmed.
Defending Champions, Guyana Power and Light head the list with Lugard Mohan and Aubrey Younge at the helm.
The Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Fire Service were also early in registering for the event.
Scotia Bank, Republic Bank, Bank of Guyana, Neil and Massy Group, Banks DIH, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, Guyana and Trinidad Mutual, Medicare and the National Insurance Scheme are also confirmed.
Digicel, Star Computers, Giftland OfficeMax, Laparkan Group of Companies, the Media, CARICOM, Barama and John Fernandes Limited completes the list of 21 teams that have shown early interest in competing in the tournament.
Panday informed that while they have not completed receiving sponsorship for the event, they have so far gotten assistance from Ansa McAl, Beepat’s, Giftland, Shell Gas Station, Dyna’s Embroidery and Medicare Pharmacy.
