– one arrested after returning to scene
Using images from a surveillance camera, police were able to arrest a man who was part of a gang that tried to torch their way into a Ruimveldt General Store early yesterday morning.
Thanks to the state-of-the-art equipment, every move of the thieves was captured despite obvious attempts to conceal their clandestine operation.
Investigators are confident that they will be able to capture the other perpetrators from information being provided by the arrested suspect who they said is no stranger to the police.
The thieves used the period during a downpour at around 03:00 hours to launch their attack.
Mahendra Balram, proprietor of the Balram and Sons General Store, told Kaieteur News that from the images captured on camera, he observed that the thieves first cut a hole in the fence surrounding the property with a shears.
After entering the compound they then turned away two cameras that would have captured their operation from a certain angle. But unfortunately for them they missed another which was eventually used to identify them.
According to Balram, the camera captured the men coming through the hole in the fence with a white bag which contained their torching equipment.
The camera revealed the men using cardboard and a large piece of black plastic to block out any possibility of them being seen by passersby.
“Everytime like a vehicle pass, you see they ducking. They had a lookout man somewhere out deh,” Balram told Kaieteur News.
Apart from the camera images, investigators were able to match the shoes of the arrested thief with footprints left on the ground after he returned to the scene while the investigations were being carried out.
“They had some footprint hey…because the rain de just done fall, de exact footprint wha went inside de yard, dat is he shoeprint come walking,” Balram said.
He explained that there was also evidence on the man’s clothes to support that he had climbed the utility pole near the business to cut the telephone lines.
“When he go up de post he slide down back and de moss (from the post) lef on pon he pants, so we done suspect is he. when de police go and check he boots and everything, the same white hat, the same boots, the same pants, all of that they got at the station with he,” the businessman said.
After torching two padlocks on the grill door the bandits were faced with another door and this might have deterred them from proceeding further.
Balram confirmed that the men did not manage to enter his store thanks to the second door.
“If I didn’t have de cameras, I woulda been at a loss. Although we get the footprint evidence, the camera show we exactly that he (the arrested suspect) was the man. If wasn’t fuh de camera we wouldn’t know exactly. We woulda just assume that he is de man because of de footprints and de moss pon de pants wha he had on. De images show we how he climb de post and cut all de telephone lines,” Balram said.
He disclosed that this is the second time that thieves have attempted to break his store, which is situated about six buildings oblique to the Ruimveldt Police Station.
