The Ministry of Agriculture will today be hosting a workshop aimed at expanding the use of drip irrigation technology in Guyana.
The workshop will be held at the Guyana School of Agriculture and will benefit from remarks by the subject Minister Robert Persaud.
A Regional Expert has also been sourced for the meet and will be interacting with various stakeholders.
Drip-Irrigation is the slow application of water to the soil through small openings in lines which are laid along the cultivation plot.
Through this system, enough water is supplied to meet crop demands and a supply of moisture could be maintained in crops’ root zones during the entire growing season.
Drip irrigation was first introduced in Guyana in October 2006 at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. It has since been applied in several other areas across the country.
As recent as March, Minister Persaud handed over 14 water tanks and four pumps to the Guyana Agricultural Producers’ Association (GAPA) as a means of counteracting the effects of the dry weather condition.
The equipment was presented during a forum organised for the non-traditional commodities sector at the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA), Mon Repos.
Minister Persaud had at the time announced that the drip irrigation system will be set up in a few farming districts to allow a steady flow of water through irrigation pipes which are placed on farms closer to the plants.
The Minister added that GAPA will also facilitate the importation of several sprinklers at the cost price enabling farmers to access these non-traditional forms of irrigation.
Although the technology has not been adapted on a very large scale, the Minister of Agriculture was confident that there would be substantial improvement in terms of local buy-in to it. He pointed out that up to this point the availability of supplies and follow-up service has been the limiting factor but the enhanced presence of major suppliers in the technology should see a turn-around in the adoption of this irrigation method.
