Eric Sankar wins final stage
Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay of Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) is the new king of the National Sports Commission (NSC) sponsored three-stage cycle road race, converting his 12 second lead after the penultimate stage into overall victory after the final stage from Linden to Homestretch Avenue, yesterday.
While not finishing in the top flight of the final stage which was taken by Eric Sankar, Mc Kay did enough to win by a similar 12 seconds from Suriname’s Mervin Arunijo (Inter Guiana Games cycling champion) and Continental Cycle Club’s Geron Williams.
Mc Kay’s winning time overall was 7 hours 5 minutes 15 seconds; 12 seconds ahead of Arunijo with Williams 2 seconds back in third. Veteran Raymond ‘Steele’ Newton (RBC) took the 4th spot (7.06:38) followed by teammate Alonzo Greaves (7.08:06) and Simon Clarke of Barbados (7.08:08) who rides for the Heat Wave team of Trinidad and Tobago.
Copping the overall junior category was Paul De Nobrega with the veteran prize going to Newton.
Sankar won the final stage in 2 hours 44 minutes 11 seconds ahead of Phillip Piggott, the Physically Challenged Walter Grant-Stuart who rode a brilliant race and another Physically Challenged rider, Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson who placed 4th.
The finals stage commenced at Cara Cara in Linden and saw a breakaway by Grant-Stuart and Jackson at Silver Hills on the Linden Soesdyke Highway. The two riders displayed phenomenal stamina and determination as they skillfully maneuvered up and down the many challenging hills on the Linden Soesdyke Highway.
The main Peloton was only able to haul in Grant-Stuart and Jackson at Houston on the East Bank of Demerara underlining the grit displayed by the two riders.
A total of 50 riders faced starter’s orders for the final stage while 64 competed in the second stage and 77 in the first. Some 25 oversees riders including Guyanese based overseas also competed in the event which was organised by National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed and sponsored by the NSC.
Honorable Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Guyana Cycling Federation President Hector Edwards and World Cycling Masters Champion Aubrey Gordon all participated in the presentation ceremony.
Hassan Mohamed was commended by members of the Diaspora for the work he has been doing for the continued development of cycling in Guyana and for the much looked forward to, 3-satge race.
Meanwhile, USA-based Ian ‘Cubby’ Davis made cash donations to Mc Kay, Grant-Stuart, Williams, Newton and De Nobrega.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
