– to be held at UG Tain Campus
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will be celebrating International Museum Day under the theme, “Museum for Social Harmony,” with an exhibition at the University of Guyana, Tain Campus, from May 18 and will run until May 21.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) defined museums as “institutions in the service of society and of its development.”
The exhibition will focus on some of the important roles that museums serve in their communities and further showcase their remarkable collections. Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples.
International Museum Day has been celebrated all over the world since 1977 to encourage awareness about the role of museums in the development of society.
Celebrations are held each year on or around May 18 and each country celebrates its own specific traditions and conditions.
In 2009, International Museum Day was celebrated under the theme, “Museums and Tourism,” to showcase how heritage can bring tourists and local communities together in new, mutually beneficial relationships.
