– says Roberts, Celebrities not intimidating
By Edison Jefford
Albouystown Captain and leading scorer, Dwayne ‘Sugar’ Roberts believes that his team is capable of beating any composition and as such, he said that the tournament Celebrities is not intimidating enough for them to have any concerns.
Albouystown/Charlestown swept Central Mackenzie last Sunday to win the first National Super Ward Basketball Championships, and will play a composition of the best players to have emerged in the tournament, the Celebrities, Saturday night.
“We are capable of beating any team this country puts together. We have guys that can be among the best here with ease. I got a slight peep at the (Celebrities’) team and from what I gather it’s a good team,” Roberts told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
He was adamant that Albouystown “has arguably one of the best guards in the country in ‘Two Feet (Kevin Joseph); one of the best small scorers with Kobe (Rodwell Fortune) and the future of local basketball with The Dream (Akeem Khanai)”.
In addition, Roberts said that he has two guys, Travis ‘Cook-up’ Foster and Nicko Fraser, who have been “playing the centre positions like they own it”. Based on those players, he said it does not matter who opposes them, they will win.
“Like I have said before, we are now peaking as a team. I don’t think we are there yet but we will get there. Hopefully that’s against the Celebrities. Together we are gelling and we are getting better. Central Mackenzie just got a taste,” Roberts boasted.
The national forward made it clear that it seem as though the composers of the Celebrities have put together an offensive team while his camp has been “preaching” the importance of defence throughout the nation-wide competition.
“They (Celebrities) have length but we will counter that with speed as we had done right through the tournament. Our aim is to prove that we are the best ward in Guyana,” he told this newspaper ahead of their biggest game of the tournament.
“(Trevor) Rose talked about making this a professional League where players will be able to benefit financially and so on, so we want to prove to Guyana that we are the first, and only professional team put together so far,” Roberts continued.
President of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Trevor Rose had said at the launch of the competition that the idea is to make the National Super Ward an annual feature and League where players will be paid to play.
The inaugural mega event will climax Saturday night following its biggest game and the presentation ceremony that will be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The festivities of the tournament will be held after on the venue’s tarmac.
