Viswanathan Anand defeated Veselin Toplalov in the 12th Game of the World Chess Championship that concluded at Sofia, Bulgaria late Tuesday night, retaining the prestigious accolade in the process.
The victory marks the fourth time that Anand has won the title after victories in 2000 in the knockout format, in 2007 in the tournament format and then in 2008 in match format against Vladimir Kramnik.
Anand weaved a “Black Magic” net in the final game in response to Topalov’s remark one day earlier that he had an advantage in the 12th game since he was playing White.
Interestingly throughout of the twelve-game match, the player using the black pieces was the one placed on the defensive, constantly struggling for survival. Interestingly, none of the two players had registered a victory while playing the black pieces.
The eventual winner defied the pattern and broke the jinx to register a superb victory, albeit helped by inaccuracies on Topalov’s part. Topalov opened with the queen pawn for the sixth time in this event but Anand surprised him by opting for the Queen’s Gambit Declined, Laskar Variation, and soon had a solid set-up.
This was an indication that the Indian had geared up for a solid game of chess. Anand finished the tournament on 6.5 points while Toplalov had 5.5 points. There were a record seven drawn games while Toplalov won the second, fourth and twelfth sets. Anand registered victories in the first and eighth sets. The champion now enjoys a rating of 2787 while his opponent is ranked 2805.
