Whim National Cricket club U-19 team defeated the Central Police Station U-19 cricket team by two wickets when the two teams clashed in a specially arranged 20/20 cricket match played recently at the Whim ground on the Corentyne Coast.
Whim won the toss and asked Police Youth Club to take first strike and they were dismissed for 149 in 17.5 overs with Chrisendat Donna 35, O’Neil Sulker 26 and Akbar Khan 18 being the principal scorers.
Bowling for Whim National Patrick Rajnauth was the main wicket taker ending with 4-18 including a Hat-trick, from his four overs.
The host in reply reached 150-8 in 18 overs with Rajnauth capping a fine all round performance with 39. Bowling for the youth club boys, Akbar Khan also had a fine all round performance with an outstanding spell of 6-21 to seal a fine all round display.
At the end of the match the winning team was presented with $4,000 and a trophy by Superintendent Lindon Alves while the runner-up collected $2,000 for their effort also from Superintendent Alves.
Rajnauth was later adjudged the man-of-the-match in a close call with Akbar Khan; he was presented with $1,000 and a trophy. Rajnauth also received the best batsman award and received a further $1,000 and a trophy.
Akbar Khan was named the best bowler on show for his 6-21 and he collected a trophy.
Donna who struck two sixes took home $1,000 for his effort; all the recipients received their awards from Superintendent Alves.
Before the start of the match the participants were address by Professor Danziel Samad Director of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus and Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha who both encouraged the teams to make full use of the opportunity given them to show case their skills.
They both made special mention of Station Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan, the coordinator of the Police Operational Youth club and organiser of the game, who they said is doing an excellent job in helping to enhance the police community relationship. Sports is recognised world wide as a community binder and events like cricket can go afar way in helping to alleviate stress.
Ronald Simon Principal of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute also gave the players a pep talk before the match.
Captain of the Police senior cricket team, Corporal Michael Newland was the match adjudicator.
