Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 1199, United Healthcare Workers East is threatening to urge the United States of America take punitive action against the Guyana Government if the current seven-month old impasse between the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union and the Bauxite Company of Guyana is not amicably resolved soon.
The US- based organization has extended solidarity with the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union workers as they seek to have a reasonable settlement with the Russian run bauxite of Guyana Inc.
The SEIU has written to President Bharrat Jagdeo; Cabinet Secretary , Dr. Roger Luncheon and Minister of Labour, Manzoor Nadir, condemning the violations of International Labour Conventions by BCGI, the company’s arbitrary termination of the Collective Labour Agreement and the wrongful dismissal of 57 workers, who are Union leaders.
The Union expressed awareness of what is being described as the pattern of union busting in Guyana, including the violation of rights of public sector employees and their union.
SEIU is demanding that the Guyana Government comply with international law, and that it ends its discrimination against the GB&GWU and that it discontinue its decertification effort.
It also wants immediate action to reinstate the affected workers and award them their lawful wages.
If these demands are not met within a reasonable time, 1199SEIU said it will consider initiating or supporting proceedings at the ILO against the Guyanese government, as well as urge the Unites States to take punitive actions against the government.
Meanwhile, the GB&GWU continues to partner with other international bodies in upping the pressure on the Government of Guyana to respect international and local laws and workers rights.
The Union said it will not relent or weaver until this matter is prosecuted to the end.
