Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson again refused to grant bail to an Imam, who is embroiled in a sex probe involving a 14-year-old girl.
Yesterday, Clairmont Meertins made his second court appearance and this time he was represented by a lawyer. Meertins, of Alexander Village, is charged with two counts of carnal knowledge.
The allegation was that Meertins on February 14, last, had carnal knowledge of a female under 15 years. It was further alleged that Meertins on February 19, last, again had carnal knowledge of the same girl. The lawyer made a bail application, however the Police Prosecutor objected, on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence.
On the last occasion, the victim told the court that she was kept against her will. The teenager also told the magistrate that she was kept in a box whenever visitors were in the home. Her hands and feet were tied up and her mouth was taped.
The 14-year-old has alleged that she was forced to have sex and was held captive for one month by the Imam. The teen also alleged that she was beaten by the Iman.
The matter had attracted the interest of the Director of Public Prosecutions Shalimar Ali-Hack, after a rank at the Ruimveldt Police Station told relatives of the victim that the file was with the DPP. However the DPP in an invited comment with this newspaper refuted that any file had been sent to her.
