– shipper claims no criminal intent
Even as investigators continue to probe the discovery of several hundred shotgun cartridges in a container shipped from the United States of America, the person in whose name the items were shipped is claiming that they were mistakenly placed in the container.
The discovery was made last Wednesday when Customs officials checked the container to evaluate import charges.
On Friday last, Police officers acting on a tip-off, seized a container destined for Ali’s Bakery, on the West Coast of Berbice. It contained more than 270 shotgun cartridges.
According to police sources, the shipping agent was “sim.cargo”. This newspaper was told that the officers were “destuffing” the container and the ammunition was found in baking pans.
The consignee for the container was not present, but the police were able to contact and detain the shipping agent.
But according to a US-based Guyanese who had shipped some of the items in the container, the shotgun cartridges, which belonged to him, were mistakenly shipped among the articles destined for the local bakery.
He claimed that a few weeks ago he sold some of the bakery items to the local bakery and had used an agent in the US to ship the items to Guyana.
Being a retiree, he also used the opportunity to ship some household items to Guyana on his personal behalf.
The man claimed that he is the owner of a shotgun in the United States and had kept the ammunition, comprising mostly bird and duck shots, in his home.
He advised that it is perfectly legal to have that amount of shotgun ammunition at his home in the United States.
According to the man, while packing the household and bakery items, the ammunition was inadvertently placed among them. He assured that he had no criminal intent.
When contacted yesterday, a senior police officer would only say that the police are investigating the matter.
