With last year’s champion, Pele FC out of the championships, the Mayor’s Cup football extravaganza will witness the ascension of a new champion.
The line up for semi-finals places who will eventually advance to contest the championship game will be known tomorrow evening at the Georgetown Football Club ground, Bourda.
To date most of the big name teams have been dumped from the reckoning. The latest, Alpha United were booted by Riddim Squad last Friday evening in a penalty shootout, while the Guyana Defence Force hung on in a spirited contest against Uprising to win on Sudden Death penalty kicks.
Well who will join GDF and Riddim Squad is anyone’s guess. Opening at 6:00pm, Santos will take on Seawall FC of the West Demerara, and both will look to join the pair already into the semis.
The other quarter-final contest will pit Kashif and Shanghai Kings, BK International Western Tigers up against Fruta Conquerors. A keenly contested game is anticipated between these two city rivals.
The top four are assured of lucrative incentives of $500,000, $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively, however, all the teams will be focused on the top $500,000 prize.
Among the companies lending support are Digicel, Macorp, Guyana Beverage Company Ltd (Busta), Banks DIH Ltd, GT&T, Beepat and Sons, Bakewell, Gold Target, Nazar Mohamed, Keishar’s, Giftland Office Max and DDL.
