England’s Captain Paul Collingwood told the media at the post match briefing that he feels there is a major problem with the Duckworth and Lewis system in the T20 format of the game and it has got to be revised.
“I’m no mathematician and I don’t know what the format should be, but I feel that it should be revised,” Collingwood said.
He pointed out that there is no problem with it in the 50 overs, but it has to be revised for the shorter version. The England Captain disclosed that the team was very disappointed with the loss following a good batting performance that saw them post a formidable 191/5 off the allotted overs.
“The guys fought courageously, they put the opposition under pressure, especially those at the top who did the work,” Collingwood noted. He, however, said that similar results have happened to them in the past, but there are still a lot of positives to be derived out of the game. “We’re not making any excuses, I think we played a perfect game, but it did not work out for us.”
Collingwood admitted that the game against Ireland today puts them under a bit of pressure, but pointed to the positives coming out of yesterday’s game as a motivating factor that could see them through. “We know what we have to do and I pray for a game of 20 overs, but we don’t know what the weather will do,” Collingwood stated.
West Indies Captain Chris Gayle in his comments at the briefing acknowledged that the English batters must take credit for their performance, especially Eoin Morgan and Luke Wright. He said that their partnership set up the game nicely to be a good one, before the rains came and forced it to be decided on the Duckworth and Lewis system.
Speaking of his own batting form, Gayle informed that he has been playing cricket and batting well, hitting the ball crisply and is extremely pleased with that.
Asked whether the weather was the reason for his initial onslaught in the early overs of their reply, Gayle said that they knew it would have been a factor and they decided to go out and be aggressive in the first 5 overs.
The West Indies have now qualified for the second stage of the tournament, while England will have to beat Ireland today to be assured of moving on to the next phase.
Daren Sammy, who collected the Man-of-the Match award, told the media that the way the team played was far more important that his individual performance.
“I’m just happy that I’m taking the responsibility to do the best I could for the team seriously,” Sammy said.
