Former national scrabble champion, Fred Collins won five games and drew one to compile 5 1/2 points and a positive spread of 540 to capture the top prize when the nations best word formers convened for the Labour Day Open championships at the Maltenoes Sports Club, Thomas Lands yesterday morning.
His victims were Gafoor (93 and 12), Orlando Michael (177), Ewart Adams (213) and Colin Chichester (45). Elton Clarke was the only player to offer any resistance to Collins and he managed to secure a draw to share the one point with Collins.
Gafoor’s double loss to Collins followed by a second round loss to Adams cost him the premiere podium spot but he still managed to amass three wins and a positive spread of 148 to occupy the second place. He defeated Elton Clarke (131), Colin Chichester (126) and Orlando Michael (48).
Michael finished with a similar amount of points as Gafoor but was confined to the final podium spot by dint of a lower positive spread (103).
Most of the top seeds were absent from the proceedings but are expected to compete in the next tournament, the Indian Arrival Open, scheduled for the same venue this Wednesday starting at 10:00hrs. Registration begins at 9:30hrs.
