Head of State Bharrat Jagdeo who is one of the recipients of the Champion of the Earth Award says that the recognition puts Guyana in a positive light and will have good results for the country.
Jagdeo made the pronouncement during a welcome home reception held at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, on Tuesday, where he said that for too long the name Guyana has been synonymous with Jim Jones.
Jones was the founder and leader of the People’s Temple, which is best known for the November 18, 1978 suicide deaths of more than 900 Temple members in Jonestown, along with the deaths of nine other people at a nearby airstrip (Port Kaituma) and in Georgetown.
Jagdeo said that now that Guyana is being recognized as a champion in the fight against climate change and for its promotion of a low carbon future, it would certainly bode well for the future of tourism among other industries.
Guyana has been promoting ecotourism for several years now with minimal success and is now being viewed with a renewed optimism.
The ecotourism industry is growing in Guyana, and is expected to contribute to the conservation of the largely intact natural environment.
Over the years the number of resorts and lodges has increased, offering adventure and ecotourists an experience different from the typical island experience.
It has long been recognized by the Government of Guyana that eco-tourism is a potentially valuable and sustainable use of tropical forest ecosystems, and this recognition led to a World Bank/Commonwealth Secretariat grant for a study on the potential for eco-tourism in the Iwokrama Forest.
The study concluded that eco-tourism is a viable and appropriate endeavour for the Iwokrama Center, which has several characteristics that give it a potential comparative advantage in the development of eco-tourism.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
