Guyana’s former basketball stars will attempt to show this generation how it’s done when the Georgetown Masters take on the Pioneers Thursday night in the preceding game of an anticipated heated contest in Semi-Final Two.
The Masters will play in a grudge game in honour of local basketball hero, Mike Brusche, who is currently in Guyana, when the Mackeson National Super Ward Basketball Championships continue at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The two teams are to roll back the years before Albouystown/Charlestown take on Christianburg in the second semi-final game. The word on the street is that both Masters teams are leaving nothing to chance in the grudge duel.
“How it will be bloopers when you have one of the best coaches and teachers in the game playing,” one of the players told Kaieteur Sport briefly yesterday. It seems as though the former generation has an intense little contest going on.
The ‘GT’ Masters will feature former national captain and Caribbean Basketball Confederation All-Star Point Guard, Lugard Mohan, who is also an International Basketball Federation (FIBA) accredited referee.
Mohan’s support should come from sharp-shooting guard, Chris Douglas, who had owned the Emperors Basketball Club and who was the former President of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA).
In addition to them, former national forward, Dane Kendal and current GABA Vice-President, Floyd Levi should also feature for the ‘GT’ Masters along with Tommy Douglas, Floyd Manifold and Rawle Pollard among others.
The Pioneers will balance things off with a side that seem to be more youthful than the GT Masters, but what may be lacking in youth can certainly be made up in skill, which is what the GT Masters has in their strong composition.
The Pioneers will feature Mark Agard, a former national point guard, national women’s and junior coach and Head Coach of the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club. He has a wealth of experienced players in his Pioneers side to lead.
Former national centre, Ian Andrews will make his appearance for the Pioneers along with ex-nationals Robert Cadogan, Tony Harris and Kenrick Thomas. This team is one to watch in what is expected to be a colossal generational battle.
Dexter Muir and Ervin Dey were also among the names on the Pioneers list. Both teams are complete with 12 players and should make a good introduction for the last semi-final game of the mammoth inaugural Mackeson Super Ward.
