– condemned prisoner accused of planning breakout
Hafeez Hoosein, a Death Row inmate in the Camp Street jail, is now in solitary confinement. And his detention in solitary is not in keeping with similar punishment meted out to inmates of his calibre. He is being accommodated in the Brick Section which is reserved for those who misbehave in the General Population.
On Monday, prison officials were prompted to conduct a mid-morning search of the condemned man’s cell. Reports out of the prison stated that they found nothing.
However, they returned sometime later, around 17:00 hours, and after almost ripping apart the cell, found a hammer and a chisel in the bathroom used by 11 condemned inmates. The authorities later said that they found a host of other things and that Hoosein, who has been on Death Row for 14 years, was trying to escape.
They also photographed the cell, possibly to bring charges against the inmate.
Hoosein was incarcerated for the 1993 murder of an overseas-based Guyanese, Moonsammy, who was on vacation in Black Bush Polder.
Four people were arrested and charged with the murder. Two were sentenced to death—Hoosein and Vivikanand Singh—while the others were jailed for 10 years and three years.
Yesterday, after news of Hoosein’s move to the solitary block, his wife attempted to visit him at the prison but was denied.
A source said that she sought the services of Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-Fat. He too was denied the chance to visit the prisoner.
The prison officials however told him that Hoosein was in solitary confinement for attempting to escape, according to a source close to the family.
However, a source familiar with the prison said that even if Hoosein was going to escape, the location of his cell would have caused him to break out into the yard.
The prison authorities declined to comment yesterday.
