– placed on $100,000 bail
Once again, television station owner, Chandra Narine Sharma, who is embroiled in a sex probe with an underage girl, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
This time he was charged with obstructing the course of justice, when he allegedly removed the underage girls and their mother from their home, to prevent the police from finding them.
The allegation was that Sharma, on April 15, willfully attempted to obstruct the course of justice when he removed the children and their mother from their Robb Street home, so as to prevent the police from locating them, so that they could be questioned about the sexual molestation allegation against Sharma.
He pleaded not guilty. He was represented by attorney at law Nigel Hughes, who told the court that his client posed no flight risk since his passport is lodged with the police, and since his visa has been revoked.
Hughes also said that his client has become a “friend of the police” because they know his whereabouts.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford did not oppose bail. The prosecutor explained that on Friday, some of Sharma’s relatives were charged with the same offence. He said that charges would be withdrawn and the new charge would include Sharma.
Attorney at law Nigel Hughes interjected and said that joint charge would have a serious legal impact.
Bail was granted in the sum of $100,000 and he is to report to court on May 21.
On Friday last, five associates of the embattled businessman, including a former reporter and his son-in-law, were charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice. The five are Tyrone Ali, Mark Reid, Ravi Mangar, Raywattie Ramsaywack and Doodnauth Sharma.
They were placed on bail and ordered to report to court on May 21.
