– Imam’s wife reportedly sends threats
“I gave another statement to the police yesterday and I am afraid to send my daughter on the road because threats have been made on her life,” said the mother of the 14-year-old who was allegedly raped by a village Imam.
The Imam is presently incarcerated, and facing two counts of carnal knowledge.
According to the mother, her daughter received phone calls last Friday from someone claiming that she wanted to reach a settlement in the case.
“However, my daughter told them that the court will settle the matter.”
The mother explained that on Saturday her daughter received another call and on this occasion, the girl enquired who was the person calling. “It was the man’s wife calling, and she said that… because her husband was imprisoned, she will kill my daughter if she catches her.”
The fearful mother revealed that the Ministry of Human Services wants her daughter to attend school; however, she is terrified to send her daughter on the road, since the man’s wife lives just in the neighbourhood.
“I would like the police to take action since the woman might carry out her threats.”
The village Imam, Clairmont Meertins, of Alexander Village, is now incarcerated after facing two counts of carnal knowledge.
The allegation was that Meertins, on February 14, 2010, had carnal knowledge of a female under 15 years of age.
It was further alleged that Meertins, on February 19, 2010 again had carnal knowledge of the same girl. He was not required to plead since the charge was indictable.
He is expected to make another court appearance on May 4; the matter was also transferred to court six for trial. Kaieteur News understands that additional charges are expected to be laid against Meertins.
