A fisherman, who was the victim of a pirate attack two Saturdays ago, is appealing to the Minister of Home Affairs to discuss the various matters affecting himself and fishermen in Berbice.
The fisherman, Tombie Versammy, is peeved at the way the investigations were done, since only one person who he claims is the mastermind behind the attack on his vessel has been arrested so far.
According to Versammy, the police have not conducted a proper investigation to locate the others that were a part of the act.
He claimed that the mastermind of the attack who was positively identified at an ID parade must know where his associates are located.
“The police have not recovered anything and I am made to suffer, some pirates were caught. Why can’t they return my valuables?” the owner and captain of the boat said.
Pirates, armed with a shotgun, “long gun” and a handgun, robbed the East Coast Demerara fisherman and his five crew members while they were at sea in the vicinity of Number 43 Village, Berbice last Saturday. They helped themselves to fish, fish glue, a GPS device, fuel, engine and clothing belonging to the men.
Following the attack, several fishermen armed themselves and almost managed to capture all the attackers.
Without the assistance of the police they were able to recover a boat containing stolen fish and glue.
According to Versammy, he was attacked seven miles off the Number 47 Village, Corentyne shoreline by six pirates in a 40 feet boat.
“They put us to lay on the ground. One had a shotgun and one had a handgun, and they ordered two of the workers to take out the fish from our boat and put it in theirs, then they asked who is the Captain, and I said me, and was lashed in the face and told to take off my engine.”
Versammy revealed that after the pirates ransacked his boat and also took their fish glue, they managed to travel with an old spare engine they were left with towards Georgetown.
They subsequently made contact with another vessel, and then calls were made to notify the anti-pirate squad which later located the pirates’ vessel with almost nothing onboard.
He explained that a woman came forth to claim the boat and was arrested but later released.
However, the suspected mastermind was positively identified by himself and two other crew members who were on board.
Versammy disclosed that he and his crew gave statements to the police pertaining to the robbery last Thursday.
He believes that enough was not done to fully bring the perpetrators to justice, since six persons attacked him.
He lamented the fact that the police have not indicated if they have retrieved any of his valuables, since without his recently bought engine and other valuables, he is left in a crisis and has no other source of income.
“I would like to reach the Home Affairs Minister or someone in government or authority to discuss the problem we are facing in Berbice,” Versammy said.
