Dear Editor,
According to NACTA’s latest survey in Trinidad, UNC and Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar is more liked than PNM Leader and Prime Minister Patrick Manning and COP Leader Winston Dookeran.
However, this does not mean she is favoured to win the May general elections. In fact, according to the poll’s findings, the election is turning out to be a race between the PNM and the combined opposition forces.
Voters were asked if they have a favourable or unfavourable opinion of each of the three main political leaders. According to the findings, Kamla’s favourability rating is 51% with an unfavourable rating of 37%, giving her a net positive rating of 14%. Manning’s favourability is 31%, with an “unfavourability” of 49%, for a net negative rating of 18%. Dookeran’s favourability is 26% with unfavourability of 47% for a net negative of 21%, making Kamla the only one with a positive net rating and the most liked political figure in Trinidad.
Over the last year, Prime Minister Manning has seen his approval rating sliding, reaching its lowest last January but it appears to be climbing back now during the election campaign as he rallies the PNM faithful to his corner.
The bulk of Kamla’s positive rating comes from UNC and (former) COP supporters while the bulk of Dookeran’s rating comes from current and former COP supporters with virtually no favourability from among UNC supporters.
The poll finds many Africans and most mixed races are not very pleased with Manning, but feel he has a better plan to govern the country and are backing him. They favour Manning over Kamla. Indians are overwhelmingly displeased with Manning and are determined to vote out the PNM because they feel it is “UNC’s time now” to govern.
Indians also favour Kamla two to one over Dookeran viewing her as more charming and having greater political appeal than Dookeran in mobilizing the population towards a change in government.
However, those who favour Dookeran describe him as a man of honesty and integrity.
This poll was conducted over the last week among a random sample of 658 likely voters interviewed in intercept contact to represent a demographic composition of the population. The poll was coordinated by Vishnu Bisram.
