The first two semi-final places will be decided tonight at the Georgetown Football Club ground when action in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football championship continue at the venue starting at 6:00pm with a double header.
Fans should be in for a treat. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will oppose Uprising in the night’s opening encounter, while the nightcap brings together BK International Western Tigers and Fruta Conquerors.
The remaining teams in the tournament have their sights zeroed on the first prize of $500,000, while $200,000 goes to the second placed finisher, third receives $100,000 and the fourth placed side collects $50,000. Only four of the eight teams in the quarter-finals, set to be played tonight and Wednesday, will stake a claim on the prize money.
GDF, recently beaten by Camptown in the GFF Super League last week, will look to rebound in commanding fashion against a formidable Uprising unit.
The army side will depend on Stellon David, Sheik Kamal, Trevon Lythcott, Royan Morrison, Eusi Phillips, Warren Gilkes, Desford Williams, and Shawn Arthur to lead their march to the final four.
Uprising, capable of turning on the heat on any team, are expected to come out sniping for the soldiers. Their firing line includes Rensford Coleridge, Daniel Favourite, Omali Nassy, Terrence Lewis, Keith Fraser, Devon Dooker and Colin Clarke.
The opening explosive encounter will set to tone for what is anticipated to be a pitched battle between two old foes. The Tigers with their claws well sharpened are on the hunt to maul. The will be up against Conquerors, who will be aiming to conquer. While the supporters of the teams will say their side will win, only when the final whistle sounds it will be known for a fact which of the teams advances.
Tigers feature Oswald Cornette, Sherman David, Michael Henry, Odel Williams, Dwayne Alli, Nedd Fraser, Gideon Payne, Linden Picket and Maxwell Pellew.
Conquerors will look to Eon Alleyne, Paul Bobb, Mustapha Hack, Sheldon Shepherd, Neville Stanton, Warren Lawrence, Travis Savoury, Colin Edwards and Joslyn Harry to carry their charge. Fans are indeed in for an entertaining evening considering the ability of the respective teams, who are much closer to the prize.
The second set of quarter-final games will be contested at the same venue on Wednesday with Santos opposing Seawall FC and Alpha battle Riddim Squad.
The winners of these encounters move to the semi-finals set for Friday April 30. The final will be contested on May 5.
