…forced to land at Issano after encountering bad weather
A Surinamese-registered helicopter that went missing on Thursday has been located with its four passengers and pilot safe.
Local aviation officials said yesterday, that the chopper was forced to put down at Quartz Stone, Region Seven, around 18:00 hrs Thursday after encountering difficulties from the weather.
The helicopter, at 16:00 hrs yesterday, was still there said Zulficar Mohammed, Director-General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), as bad weather was still hampering its departure. The official said that it was unclear whether the aircraft could have made it out yesterday.
Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Robeson Benn, whose portfolios cover the aviation industry, said that air traffic controllers last heard from the helicopter around 18:00 hrs.
However, the Guyana Defence Force received radio messages around 23:00 hrs Thursday night that the pilot had to land in the Quartz Stone area due to bad weather.
Residents of that area confirmed yesterday that the helicopter was still in the area, Minister Benn said.
Kaieteur News was told that the helicopter left Ogle Airport with GDF pilot, Captain Weeks, and four others for Issano, Region Seven.
Kaieteur News was told that the chopper was chartered from Suriname. The party was to spend about an hour on the ground and then return to the city.
