Simone De Nobrega, 29, who goes by several other aliases, once again appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, to answer two more charges of obtaining money by false pretence, yesterday. De Nobrega is currently charged with 12 counts of obtaining money by false pretence. Those matters have been adjourned for statements to be served to the parties.
Yesterday, one charge stated that De Nobrega, with the intent to defraud, obtained the sum of $1.4M between December 3, 2009 and January 19, 2010 from Babzie Mangru, to purchase one Toyota minibus.
The second charge read that De Nobrega obtained $800,000 on December 9 from Chetram Tateram, under the pretence that she could obtain one minibus. To both charges she pleaded not guilty. The accused was represented by attorney at law Gordon Gilhuys.
The lawyer in his address to the court said that on the last occasion, the prosecution had said that statements would have been available. The lawyer said that the prosecution also had to seek legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford said that advice was given but it is not written. Bail was refused for the two matters. De Nobrega is expected to make another court appearance on May 24.
Last month De Nobrega was granted $1.8M bail in the High Court, however she remained incarcerated because she was unable to post bail. The woman, who is no stranger to the court, was previously charged in connection with a visa scam.
De Nobrega, who operated a car dealership, allegedly collected large sums of cash from unsuspecting persons who were attempting to purchase vehicles.
De Nobrega and Tulsie Persaud were charged on January 11 and 12 with four counts of obtaining money by false pretence for allegedly pretending that they were in a position to obtain US visas, knowing same to be false.
