– being investigated for perverting course of justice
Four persons were detained overnight at the Brickdam Police Station and are being investigated for perverting the course of justice, namely the offering of a bribe.
This newspaper understands that one of the persons arrested is a relative of Chandra Narine Sharma who was recently charged with carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl.
The other three arrested include an employee of the same relative of Sharma who was arrested along with two of Sharma’s employees.
On Monday last, relatives of the girls reported that they were being offered a whopping $10M to discontinue the proceedings.
According to the aunt who initially brought the story to light, someone whom she claims is a relative of Sharma, had been approaching her family with huge cash offers.
The first offer was reportedly for five million dollars but this was doubled the following day.
The woman told this newspaper in a telephone interview that she was at work on Saturday last when she received a telephone call from home, informing her that an offer of $5M was proposed.
This was subsequently raised to $10M, the woman said.
“The person say that we could take the money and finish the story and we must take the girl to Berbice,” the woman added.
Meanwhile, the embattled television owner and leader of the Justice For All Party, has been readmitted to the hospital after reportedly suffering another bout of hypertension (high blood pressure).
Kaieteur News understands that Sharma was rushed to a private institution after he complained of chest pains.
His lawyer Nigel Hughes confirmed last night that his client is in hospital after he suffered another attack. The lawyer said that he had not spoken to his client to ascertain his condition.
A source close to the investigation confirmed that the mother of the children who are making allegations against Sharma, is now in police custody.
The woman was arrested on Tuesday and is being questioned. The source said that she has been denying all the allegations.
The source also revealed that a file is being prepared for legal advice to ascertain if any charges can be laid against the mother.
On Wednesday, Sharma was granted bail in the sum of $2M when he appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The previous day, Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson had remanded Sharma to prison.
