Head of McNeal Promotions, Odinga Lumumba, yesterday announced the new date for the Shondell Alfred and Corrine Van Ryck DeGroot rematch for the WIBA bantamweight title Alfred won from DeGroot.
Lumumba informed that the new date is May 22 and the fight could possibly be shifted to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. He explained that due to some feasibility studies into the card being staged at the Princess Hotel being looked at, it is not sure what the outcome will be and the Sports Hall is being reserved as an alternate venue.
The card was originally set for May 2 but due to a clash with several other major local events, including the Hugh Ross Bodybuilding Classic, the McNeal Group decided to shift to May 22. It was also informed, as appearing in the media, the card was postponed due to the late response from DeGroot in signing the contract. Those hurdles are now out of the way and all is set for the May 22 event.
Lumumba also told the media that he had no contractual arrangement with Alfred stipulating that he must provide money for her training expense. He was referring to an article appearing in a recent Kaieteur News edition where Alfred had indicated that she was not given money to aid her preparation as was promised.
Lumumba informed that he had promised to disburse some funds to her and it was out of his own pocket. The other form could be an advance of her purse. He was also out of the country prompting the delay in handing over the funds. However, in keeping his (Lumumba) previous promise, McNeal promotions General Manager Maurice ‘Bizzy’ Boyce handed over a cheque for $100,000 to Alfred to assist her training expenses.
President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control Peter Abdool was also present at the briefing.
Meanwhile, the McNeal boss disclosed that Elton Dharry has agreed to be a part of the May 22 card. More details on his opponent will be disclosed shortly.
