But fans must have tickets to enter stadium
By Sean Devers
West Indies will play two practice games in Guyana before playing two more matches when the 2010 Twenty/20 cricket World Cup officially commences on April 30 at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
The home team, which take on Ireland on April 30 and England on May 3 in the first round of the World Cup, will face new comers Afghanistan at Providence from 15:00hrs in a Day/Night warm-up match after New Zealand and Ireland take on each other from 13:00hrs the same day.
The second practice for the home team match is set for Providence on April 28 when West Indies take on New Zealand from 17:00hrs after Ireland face Afghanistan from 13:30hrs.
Admission to the warm-up matches is free but fans will be required to produce tickets to enter the stadium to facilitate crowd control and security measures.
Sabrina Panday, who runs the Guyana ICC T/20 secretariat, said only 50% of the Stadium will be used to accommodate spectators for the four warm-up games on April 27& 28.
Tickets for the Warm up games have been shared out to various bodies including the Ministry of Sports while the remainder of tickets will be distributed at the Ticketing Centre at the Guyana Cricket Board Office at Bourda and only four tickets per household will be given out.
Panday said that tickets for the Warm up matches will be distributed on a first come first served basis until all are finished and stressed that tickets for April 27 CANNOT be used for the next day or visa versa.
“Everyone who enters the Stadium for the warm-up games must be accredited or have a ticket and will have to follow all procedures that will be in place on the days of the official matches,” Panday disclosed.
She said that although the practice matches will be scaled down with only two stands being opened, the Police and medical personal will be in full attendance during the Warm-up matches.
The recent dry weather in Guyana has not negatively affected the outfield at Providence and the ground is lush green and a good batting surface being promised by the ground staff.
The men’s teams will play their warm-ups from 27 to 29 April in Barbados, St Lucia and Guyana while the women will play on 2 and 3 May in St Kitts. In line with previous ICC events, none of these matches will carry official Twenty20 International status.
It should be noted in the men’s warm-up schedule that India has elected not to play any warm-up matches while Sri Lanka has opted to play only one warm-up match.
Tickets for the first two days of matches in Guyana are already sold out and those for the final day of action in South American are going fast as everyone is excitedly waiting for the top 20/20 players in the world to ‘bring it’ to Providence.
