Leading sides Alpha the Hammer United and Riddim Squad will hunt quarter-finals places tonight at the Georgetown Football Club ground when play in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football championship continue from 6:00pm.
Riddim Squad open the evening’s proceedings against Grove Hi Tech in what should be a keenly contested encounter between the two East Bank Demerara based sides. Grove, who had a good showing in the East Bank Carib Beer League will look to raise their game in the face of a potent rival in Riddim Squad.
Grove Hi Tech will depend on John Matthews, Mervin Squires, Sherman Doris and Erson Francois.
They will have their work cut out because the rampaging Riddim Squad unit will have the formidable Hope brothers and their cousins the Ramsey’s to contend with. Steffon, Sceyon, Sherwin and Sheldon Hope are expected to come out firing along with cousins Amos and Llyton Ramsey and Mark Gilkes.
Golden Grove, who replaced East Coast counterparts Victoria Kings in the tournament, will hope to represent the East Coast and spring a surprise. They will hope that Dexter Rodney, Kwesi Halley, Carlos Kingston, Randy King and Alex Mahaica come hard at the city side.
How hard they come, fans will see tonight, but can they handle the pressure of the Hammer. Led by Howard Lowe, Kelvin McKenzie, Dwayne Jacobs, Quincy Madramootoo and Anthony Abrams, all known sharpshooters, Alpha will be hard to beat on this stage. They were impressive in their final game of the CFU club championship and would look to keep their tight hold on local football, having been dominant in recent years.
Fans should be in for a treat.
At stake in the tournament is a first prize of $500,000, while $200,000 goes to the runners up. The team finishing third receives $100,000 while the fourth placed side collects $50,000.
