Berbice High School and Port Mourant Secondary carted off the honours in the senior and junior categories respectively when the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Berbice branch of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, staged the Berbice National School’s Championships at the JC Chandisingh Secondary School Port Morant, Friday morning last.
Berbice High School amassed 31/2 points while Port Mourant Secondary, spearheaded by Damieon Butters (4 points), carted off the honours in the individual category
Reports from Berbice are that JC Chandisingh Secondary enjoyed the lead going into the final round but faltered at this crucial stage, losing to Berbice High in the final round. That school eventually amassed 3 points, the same as New Amsterdam Secondary but placed second by dint of the Median Buchollz system.
In the other results, Corentyne Comprehensive scored 21/2 points while Tagore Memorial, Skeldon Line Path Secondary and Rosignol Secondary all finished bundled together on 2 points apiece.
Eversham Primary and Canje Secondary ended in the cellar on one point apiece.
Meanwhile, Nicholas DeFrance of Port Morant Primary finished second to Butters. Deon Debydeen of JC Chandisingh Secondary sealed off the final podium position.
Other results in this category read: Damieon Butters (4), Nicholas DeFrance (3), Deon Debydeen and Mounesh Latchman (21/2 apiece), Sean Bhajan, Shoun Williams and Elizabeth Ramgoolan (2 apiece) and Joel Lyte and Andrew Gangaprashad (1 point apiece).
The tournament was organized with an aim of increasing the awareness level in the Ancient County. The tournament, which took the form of a Swiss format, consisted of four rounds with a time limit of one hour per game.
Ms. Shafiran Bhajan, Regional Education Officer of Region 6, presented the various prizes to the winners. Berbician, Mr. Krisanan Raghunandan, also rendered valuable assistance towards the successful staging of the tournament. Over forty-five students from thirteen schools participated in the tournament.
