…victim reportedly attacked rank with knife
A visit to the Byariat (Hindu wedding bridegroom section) yesterday turned ugly after a rank of the Guyana Police Force had to intervene in a scuffle which ended with a 23 year-old being shot in his leg.
According to reports, Vidyanand Ramrattan called ‘Romel’ was initially at the bride’s section of a Hindu wedding at Bee Hive on the East Coast of Demerara but left to visit the bridegroom’s section at Mahaicony with his 17-year-old brother yesterday afternoon.
While at the wedding celebrations, a scuffle ensued between his brother and some other persons and he intervened.
This newspaper was told that Ramrattan took his brother to his car but the attackers still persisted.
A senior officer of the Guyana Police Force who had witnessed what was transpiring called ranks from a nearby Police Station, who responded.
When they confronted Ramrattan, he reportedly pulled out a knife and confronted the ranks.
In turn he was shot in the leg and was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Police have since taken possession of the knife.
