A well known ‘Trunker’ is nursing a gunshot wound in the region of his hip after a licenced firearm holder opened fire on him while he was breaking into a car on the Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara Public Road around 14:30 hours yesterday.
The suspect, who reportedly hails from Grove, East Bank Demerara, managed to escape by jumping into a waiting car which sped south towards Providence.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and his two accomplices who were travelling in a white AT 212 Toyota Carina motorcar with the licence plate HB 2471.
Kaieteur News understands that the victim is an overseas-based Guyanese who was scheduled to leave the country today.
According to reports, the victim had just left a nearby dental technician’s premises and had stopped at the popular M&M Snackette to have a snack.
He had parked the car a short distance away, leaving his video camera, cell phone and a bag containing passports and other important documents inside.
There are reports that the suspects were lurking in the area waiting to pounce on their unsuspecting victims.
An eyewitness told this newspaper that the shot bandit first entered the car through the front door using an improvised breaking instrument.
After securing a cell phone and the video camera, he then tried to grab the bag that was in the back seat of the car.
But by then, a Rural Sergeant who was in the area was informed and he confronted the suspect.
A round was discharged hitting the ‘Trunker’ in his left side hip.
With the stolen video camera and cellular phone, the wounded suspect limped towards the car in which his accomplices were waiting and they made good their escape.
“He run hollering, ‘ah get hit, ah get hit’. And two men in de car pull he in and they drive away,” said an eyewitness.
The rural sergeant claimed that although he knew that he had hit the suspect, he was reluctant to discharge anymore rounds, since the area was teeming with traffic and there was the possibility that a stray bullet could have struck an innocent person.
The police were also alerted and they went in pursuit of the suspects, but up to last night there was no trace of the men or the getaway car.
However, they have managed to ascertain that the car is registered to a Grove, East Bank Demerara woman.
The woman when contacted by police claimed that she operates a car rental service and she had rented the car recently.
Kaieteur News has learnt that all public and private hospitals have been alerted to be on the lookout for the injured ‘Trunker’ who will definitely require medical attention.
