Three persons, including a husband and wife, who were captured at Baracara up the Canje River on Monday during the police continuous anti-crime operations, were on Wednesday remanded to prison by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo. The trio appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s court. They pleaded not guilty.
The three accused, Glenvis Hinds, 46, his wife Shondell Hinds, 40, and Freddie Edwards , 25, all of Baracara were remanded to prison until May 7 when they will appear at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
Glenvis Hinds is facing four charges; Possession of arms; Possession of Ammunition without being a licence holder; Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of Trafficking and Cultivating Prohibited Plants. His wife is facing three of those charges, having not been accused of cultivating prohibited plants.
Edwards is facing one charge, that of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
According to Prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira, the police were on an anti-crime operation up the Berbice River and after receiving certain information, raided a house at Baracara and in the process found a 12-gauge shotgun along with five matching rounds and 14 kilogrammes 653 grammes of dried marijuana. Half an acre of marijuana plants ranging from two feet to seven feet in height were found a little distance away. The couple was found in the vicinity and was promptly arrested.
Figueira further stated that Edwards was found with a haversack which contained 158 grams of marijuana in his possession at his house.
Prosecutor Figueira stated that bail should be refused because of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the crime. He said that according to the statutes, bail could only be granted on special reasons and none were put forward by the defence. Attorney at Law Charrandass Persaud represented the accused.
