Executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) are earnestly addressing their mandate of providing a platform for the development of local amateur pugilists when several members of the executive committee held talks with the hierarchy of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) with an aim of coordinating their activities with that coercive arm of the state.
Commander of ‘C’ Division, Mr. Leroy Brumell was appointed as the representative of the boxers on the Police Force and would further be responsible for all matters pertaining to security and other relevant issues at boxing matches. Commander Brumell assured the executive members of GABA of his organization’s commitment to governing entity as well as the boxers in general.
At that meeting also, the Commander committed to the enactment of a database of the boxers representing his organization. He acknowledged the importance of the police in the development of the boxers.
“The role of the Joint Services is extremely important to our boxers’ well being,” stressed Mr. Brumell.
The Guyana Police Force has been a force on the boxing scene until the early nineties when the boxing gym that was situated in Rabbit Walk, was scrapped.
By then most of the boxers that had represented the Police had either aborted the sport or left the Force. Former flyweight amateur boxer, Ray Jones was in charge of the boxers up until the scrapping of the gym.
He is still a member of the Force and may be asked to resume duties at the helm. Mr. Brumell is a former lightweight pugilist of the Guyana Police Force.
Vice President of GABA, Maurice Rajkumar and Secretary, Shawn Richmond were among the executives present at the function including assistant secretary/treasurer, Keith Campbell, Public Relations Officer, Michael Benjamin and Organizer of bouts, Terrence Poole.
