In an atmosphere devoid of the customary caustic remarks and confrontational scenes, professional boxers scheduled to appear on the third edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control monthly ProAm boxing card, affixed their respective signatures to the contract to solidify their participation on the programme.
This month’s activity was initially scheduled for Sunday April 25 but the organizers have decided to postpone the event until Sunday May 2 to facilitate the Twenty 20 cricket matches slated for the National Stadium Providence on that day. The card brings together eight professionals in four exciting encounters and a similar number of amateurs also in a similar number of contests.
Activities get underway with the first amateur bout between women lightweight boxer, Natasha Ashby (FYF) trading punches with Amanda Norville (HE). Fight number two witnesses Republican Nankumar Singh battling GDF representative, Clairmont Gibson while junior/welterweight Akeem Alexander (CBG) opposes David Thomas (Rep). Fight fans would also witness a heavyweight bout between heavyweight boxer Romeo Norville (HEBG) up against Trelon Munroe (Rep).
The professionals take over half an hour after the culmination of the amateur bouts with Theophilus King attempting to tame Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes in a catchweight affair. Kwesi Jones would battle against James Walcott in a junior/middleweight bout while Sharon Warde and Pauline London match gloves in another catchweight bout. In the night’s opener, Laurex Benn opposes Michael DeMattos in the junior/middleweight division.
All fights would be televised live on NCN Channel 11.
