The Guyana Defence Force have assumed the lead in the Guyana Football Federation Super League competition following their 2-0 win over West Demerara’s Seawall on Sunday evening at the GFC Ground, Bourda.
Earlier in the afternoon at the Enmore Community Centre Ground, East Demerara’s Victoria Kings softened Bartica’s Liquid Gold 5-1, the visitors being reduced to 9 men with two of their players issued red cards. At the GFC Ground, the Army found the going tough against a sturdy Seawall line up and got both their goals in the first half pouncing on defensive lapses by the West Demerara side.
Dependable striker Delroy Deen was his alert self when he intercepted a back pass to the goalkeeper Marvin Griffith by a defender to slot the ball into the back of the nets in the 15th minute. Strike partner Stellon David doubled the lead in the 32nd minute again as a result of defensive lapse on the part of Seawall.
The win propelled the GDF into the lead with 10 points one ahead of defending champions Alpha United and Milerock. It also meant that the GDF and Alpha who defeated Buxton 8-1 remain the only unbeaten sides in the 10 team league.
At the Enmore Ground, Victoria Kings recorded their first win of the competition and did so in emphatic style, blanking Liquid Gold 5-1.
Pierre Joseph led with a brace of goals converting in the 16th and 80th minute, Seon Robinson opened in the 9th minute while there was also one each for Andrew Gibson (49) and Kwesi De Souza three minutes to full time.
Dwayne Blake pulled one back for the Bartica side in the 63rd minute. Bartica’s efforts going after the host team in the final half hour was seriously dented when Travis Garraway received a straight red card from Referee Otis James for striking an opposing player in the 64th minute.
Blake soon followed Garraway when he was booked for a second time in the game in the 76th minute. Kaieteur Sport understands that tempers flared after the eviction of the players who did not want to leave the technical area.
The referee sought to bring some order to the situation but it is alleged that he was abused verbally by the Bartica Coach who was also asked to leave the Technical area, subsequently.
A detailed report is expected to be submitted to the GFF for action to be taken.
Buxton United are on 8 points, Rosignol, Victoria Kings and Liquid Gold on 4 apiece with Sunburst Camptown, Bakewell Topp XX and Seawall on 3 each.
Action is expected to continue tomorrow with one game at the GFC Ground between Sunburst Camptown and Victoria Kings from 18:00hrs. Five matches will be contested on Sunday around the country. At the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Bakewell Topp XX face leaders GDF in the first of a double header at 18:00hrs, the main event feature defending champions Alpha United and Milerock.
At the Uitvlugt Community Centre Ground from 16:00hrs, Seawall will enjoy home advantage against Victoria Kings while the same time at the Blairmont Community centre Ground, home team Rosignol United come up against Buxton United and up at the Bartica Community Centre Ground from 18:00hrs, Liquid Gold will be challenged by Sunburst Camptown.
