Two Berbice sugar workers were yesterday hospitalized after their lorry slammed into two horses and ended up in a trench.
According to a statement from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) yesterday, the injured were transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where it was revealed that a field foreman, whose name was given as Karim, sustained a broken leg while harvester, Fenton Henry, had a broken rib. Both persons have been admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Other workers who were affected by minor cuts and bruises were treated and subsequently sent home.
The lorry, GGG 3026, carrying 49 workers, was in the vicinity of the Bohemia Primary School, East Berbice, Corentyne, Public Road, when the incident occurred, GuySuCo said. Included in group were two field foremen, a checker and 46 harvesters from Blairmont. The workers were being taken from Blairmont to the Albion estate.
GuySuCo said that the lorry was traveling at a normal speed when it hit two horses, causing the driver to lose control and ending up in a nearby trench.
However, police officials said that the absence of skid marks indicated clearly that speeding may have been a factor in the crash.
The driver, Lloyd Evans of Bush Lot Village, said that he was unable to control the truck after he hit the horses and it ended up in the trench.
Residents of the area said that shortly after 05:00 hrs, they heard a loud crash and upon investigation were greeted by the sight of the truck in the trench.
Several of the residents plunged in and pulled the injured sugar workers out. A tractor and ropes were used to extricate the truck out.
The front of the lorry was submerged after the accident, GuySuCo said yesterday.
Kaieteur News was told that the lorry is privately owned but contracted to transport sugar workers.
The Corporation said that it regrets the “unfortunate incident” and sincerely wishes those affected a quick recovery.
The Berbice roadways are known for the number of stray animals that traverse it at all hours and there have been incidents of accidents and extensive damage to property.
