– North Ruimveldt feature on opening night
By Edison Jefford
The battle lines for the opening night of the mega Mackeson Super Ward Basketball Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall were firmly drawn with Georgetown Inter-Ward Champions, North Ruimveldt to feature.
North will play East Coast in a Group ‘A’ clash in the feature game tomorrow night with Albouystown/Charlestown battling East Bank in the preceding Group ‘B’ encounter to jump off one of the biggest tournaments of the decade.
A March Pass of the respective teams and other formalities will officially get the ball on the court, but the games will set the tone with two of the favourite teams in the respective groups looking to make an early impression.
North is usually extremely strong and balanced and it was not clear up to press time last night whether or not Andrew Ifill will be returning to the team. All of the ten competing teams had up to last night to submit their respective squads.
Darcel Harris is expected to lead North while his Ravens team-mate, Dwayne Roberts is to lead the Albouystown/Charlestown side that is usually well supported. The duo will be looking to build the best possible units for the event.
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) has given each team a chance to strengthen their fold with allowing three guest players. With that rule, the teams drawn in the tournament cannot be underestimated.
Apart from Ansa McAl, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), Gizmo and Gadgets, Giftland OfficeMax, Toney’s Auto Spares, Stain Masters and Cops Security are among the other major sponsors of the competition.
The Mackeson National Super Ward Basketball Championships will doll out a whopping $500,000 to the winner of the competition. The second place team will pocket $250,000 while third and fourth places take home $150,000 and $75,000.
The Most Valuable Player receives Lebron James’ latest sneakers valued at $25,000 and a cash incentive of $10,000. The Most Defensive Player and the players with the most assists and most rebounds will also be awarded.
