Two persons who attempted to bribe a police officer to avoid prosecution were remanded to prison after they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, yesterday.
It was alleged that Manella Ramkarran, 21, and Shane Ramkin, of Third Avenue Bartica on April 2, wrongfully obstructed the course of justice by giving Detective Constable Devon Lowe the sum of $200,000 so that he would not prosecute them for narcotics possession. They pleaded not guilty to the charge and were represented by attorney at law Peter Hugh.
The lawyer, in a bail application, said that his clients were not flight risks and that they had a fix abode. Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford did not object to bail, but stated that on the day in question a party of police went to the defendants’ house and conducted a search.
Telford said that during the search the police unearthed 111 grams of cannabis. The prosecutor said that after they were arrested they made the offer to the policeman who quickly reported it to his superiors.
The magistrate denied bail and they are expected to make another court appearance on April 14.
After being remanded by the Acting Chief Magistrate the two made another court appearance, this time before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton. The two were charged jointly with two other persons.
It was alleged that Manella Ramkarran, Shane Ramkin, Marlon Braithwaite and Kenan Collymore, on April 2, at Third Avenue, Bartica had in their possession 111 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking in narcotics. They all pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Attorney at law Peter Hugh did not make a bail application, stating that he was not going to waste the court’s time.
The lawyer simply asked for the matter to be transferred and an early date set. The magistrate remanded the four defendants and they are expected to make another court appearance on April 14 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
