Uprising Football Club, known for its ability to create unlikely upsets, once again pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat to dish out a 2-0 beating to Camptown FC when the curtains went up on the Mayor’s Cup Football competition at the Georgetown Football Club Ground on Sunday evening.
In a game characterized by near misses and blatant blunders, Rensford ‘Baba’ Coleridge distinguished himself from among the blunderers to net a double in the 29th and 50th minutes to seal the victory for his team.
The game commenced at a fast pace with both teams enjoying favourable ball possession. ‘Baba’ launched several enterprising raids to the opposition’s goal and despite several near misses, persevered. He eventually reaped the rewards for his efforts when he collected a pass on the right wing to plaster the Camptown custodian and seize the initiative for his team.
Moments later, Camptown’s Quame LaFleur collected a pass and raced to Uprising’s goal with the opposition’s defenders attempting to intercept. LaFleur successfully evaded their advances but blundered with a kick that sailed over the goal. The miss ensured that Uprising maintained the lead at the half time whistle.
The score line remained the same for the greater part of the second half as both teams resorted to roughhouse tactics. Luckily, they stayed on the periphery since the referee did not see the need to flick out any of his cards.
Determined to hold on to the lead, Uprising aggressively set about the task but through anxiety allowed quite a few chances to go asunder. With the minutes ticking away and Camptown battling furiously to equalize the situation, Coleridge struck again. He received a dolly of a pass from midfield and darted towards Camptown’s goal with several players from the opposition sprinting after him. Recognizing the imminent danger posed by Coleridge’s advance, the Camptown custodian advanced but the wily forward struck soon afterwards sealing the second goal for Uprising. It proved to be a decisive strike.
Earlier in the night, Conquerors held its nerves to defeat New Amsterdam United 2-0 to advance to the next round. Mustapha Haqq in the 62nd and Jomo Hinds in the 89th were the two scorers for the winners.
The action continues tomorrow night with Grove Hi-Tech opposing Riddim Squad in the first game while Pele tackle Seawall FC in the feature match. Kick off time is 18:00hrs sharp.
