Demolition crews attached to the Ministry of Public Works, on Saturday afternoon demolished several stalls along the entrance to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
One stall holder told this newspaper that they had received warning letters from the Chief Works Officer, Rickford Lowe, since last December.
The woman explained that the letter accused the stall holders of violating the location of their stalls and that they had to remove the structure within fourteen days.
However, the vendor said that the letter also stated that they had to remove their structures at the end of the day.
She said that caused her to invest over a $100,000 to place wheels on her stall. The woman is adamant that the Ministry should have been clearer in the letter. It should have stated that the authorities did not want any structures in the area. .
“They should have told me from the inception that they didn’t want any stalls here and I would not have invested so much,” the angry vendor said.
The vendors said that they intend to appeal the decision by trying to arrange a meeting with Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn.
Since the establishment of the New Amsterdam Hospital at the new location, there had been an influx of roadside vendors, who, many times, were asked by the New Amsterdam Town Council and the Ministry of Works to cease all vending within the parameters of the hospital.
The vendors were subsequently removed from a former location along the public road a few months ago. They relocated to the current location at Garrison Road.
