After enduring flight problems that restricted practice to just one session prior to the commencement of 25th Carifta Swimming Championships, Guyanese swimmers, Jessica Stephenson and Ronaldo Rodrigues experienced mixed fortunes when the inaugural day’s activities ended on Saturday afternoon.
Stephenson, who in 2008 copped Guyana’s first ever Carifta gold medal, replicated the feat in the girls 13-14 200m breast stroke while her compatriot Rodrigues, despite a valiant effort where he clocked 2:48:39secs in the preliminary heats, shaving off 7.5 seconds off his personal best, petered out to an 8th place in the finals.
Reports coming out of Jamaica indicated that both swimmers were tired after their respective races. They were, however, pleased with their performances when everything was taken into consideration.
Coach Chris McAdam was full of praise of the performances. He offered special congratulations to Stephenson while commending her race technique.
He further lauded Rodrigues’ morning performance while expressing admiration for the excellent work and dedication of both swimmers.
Mr. McAdam said that he is optimistic that the two swimmers would turn in good performances in the remaining 2 breast stroke events which take place today and tomorrow.
The two swimmers followed up their first day’s performance with modest timings. Rodrigues competed in the 50m butterfly while Stephenson competed in the 200m free style. Their participation in these events was regarded more as an opportunity to maintain their respective fitness level. Stephenson clocked a time of 2:26.93 to finish in the eleventh place while Ronaldo clocked an improved time from 30.08 to 29:33 to finish in twelfth place. Both swimmers will compete for added honours in the 50m breaststroke today.
Once again the team manager wishes to express gratitude to the many corporate entities that made the swimmers participation a reality. These entities include GT&T Cellink, Cara Hotels, Scotia Bank and DDL. The team manager also acknowledged the support of the Guyanese community in Jamaica, singling out Honorary Consul Indira Persaud and Raymond and Dr. Sally Eytle.
