Guyana ended the second day of the CARIFTA Games without winning any medals after Jevina Straker’s gold in the Under-17 Girls 1500m on the first day of the competition that is being held at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
Straker, who is known for her superb bottom-end speed, used that to perfection down the homestretch in the 1500m. She edged Jamaican, Marlene Eubanks (4:43.45) with 4:43.33 while Netherlands Antilles’ Vanessa Philbert (4:44.80) was third.
Straker will compete in the 800m Finals today but yesterday it was all doom and gloom at the Cayman Islands’ venue for the local team as Kevin Bayley, Janella Jonas, Tiffany Carto and Chavez Ageday plummeted in their semi-finals.
Bayley, who finished 13th in his Under-20 Boys’ 1500m race with 4:25.37, was ousted in the 800m race after he finished eight in his Heat with 2:06.53. It was not clear up to press time yesterday whether Bayley will run today’s 5000m race.
Barbados’ Anthonio Mascoll won the 800m Heat that Bayley ran in a blistering 1:55.80 with Bermuda’s Henry Carty-Stevens and Jamaica’s Donahue Williams in the second and third place positions in 1:56.52 and 1:56.65 respectively.
Jonas placed eight in the Under-20 Girls’ 1500m in 5:14.06 after Jamaican Natoya Goule won the event in 4:36.34. Goule’s team-mate, Sharlene Nickle was second in 4:42.13 and Trinidad’s Dawnelle Collymore (4:46.03) third.
Tiffany Carto, who faltered in the 100m semi-final on day one of the competition, did not manage to get past the same round in the 200m. She turned in 25.44 seconds that was not enough to get her in the top three qualifying positions.
Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson won the Heat in 23.81 seconds while Barbados’ Shavonne Husbands finished second in 24.32 seconds and Bahamas’ Marvar Etienne third in 24.54 seconds. The finals are set for this afternoon.
Guyana’s three jumpers, also at the event, Parrish Cadogan, Winston Caesar and Rolston Braithwaite will compete in their respective finals today.
