Dear Editor:
The death of Sangeeta Persaud known as ‘Sheena’ casts a dark shadow on the Hindu community and its leadership forces; norms, beliefs, values, guidance, and counseling emanating from the pillars of Hinduism went awry in the case of Sangeeta.
I write this letter knowing full well the plight of the Hindu poor vis-à-vis certain Christian sects’ conversion agenda. Indeed, I acknowledge the plight of all the poor in Guyana.
It’s just that in this letter I want to mention the perennial conversion of poor Hindus to certain Christian sects and the tragic case of Sangeeta, the victim.
Poverty-stricken situations become real when we direct attention to day-to-day behaviours and face-to-face interactions and understand the symbols at work.
When we begin to focus on the capacity of the poor to purchase groceries, clothing, and books for school, and examine the institution of child labour resulting in the denial of formal education, their working conditions, the hordes of beggars and paupers, underemployment, and homelessness, then we ourselves begin to encounter the world of the poor.
And the cycle of poverty that has become a perennial habitation for the poor.
I have to say there is no difficulty if the Hindu person by choice decides to become a Christian; the problem, nonetheless, emerges when a poor Hindu family experiences tacit persuasion through gifts, etc, and indirect coercion to shift faith; this is not ethical, particularly, as the Hindu poor as well as the many other poor people in this country generally have a high dependence syndrome; where this syndrome makes them vulnerable and gullible.
Media reports seem to suggest that Sangeeta came from a ‘difficult’ and poor family, and experienced all the dynamics of behaviour accompanying such fragile family structure.
Moreover, the media reports, too, seem to suggest that the episodes leading up to her demise leave many unanswered questions. And hopefully, there would be some probe into this tragedy.
Our pillars of Hinduism must review and revise their agenda in the cause of advancing our Dharma, ensuring that the appropriate dissemination happens, and that our appreciation and understanding of other people’s cultures remain steadfast.
