20th Anniversary programme launched
Guyana’s leading Youth & Sports Organisation the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club on Sunday last hosted a successful 19th Awards Ceremony which also served as the launch of celebrations for their 20th Anniversary programme.
The Awards Ceremony, the largest of its kind to be held in Guyana saw a total of $2.5M worth of trophies, prizes and gifts handed to over 45 members of the club while several donations of sports gear and equipment were donated to 12 NGOs and schools in the Ancient County.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster addressing the huge audience of over 400 club members and special invitees, hailed the period January 2009 to March 2010 as the best ever in the club’s history.
Foster said the club undertook over 100 projects and programmes despite the economic situation which affected the entire world.
Among their major achievements during the period under review were producing four national senior cricketers, two West Indies female cricketers, a national Under-15 captain, winning all the junior cricket titles in Berbice, winning the national female cricket championship and being crowned Berbice and Guyana Cricket Board Club of the Year.
The Club also dominated the Berbice Cricket Board and Guyana Cricket Board Awards Ceremonies while the club Secretary and Female cricketer Shemaine Campbell won awards at the National Sports Commission Awards Ceremony.
The Club also organised dozens of programmes including the Annual Cricket Academy, Educational Summer Camp, Tribute to Heroes, Tribute to Teachers, Lower Corentyne Outstanding Students Awards Ceremony and Children’s Mash Parade.
Fifteen Million worth of Educational and Hygiene Kits were shared out to the less fortunate along with $2M worth of sport gear, $5M in food items, clothing and footwear.
A total of 300 educational sponsorship packages were also distributed while several sportsmen and women also received sponsorship to assist them in fulfilling their dreams. Success, Foster stated was achieved through hard work, internal unity and a strong desire to make a positive difference in the lives of youths, the elderly and less fortunate.
President of the Club, Keith Foster in a forceful presentation reflected on the formation of the Club in 1990 and stated that the progress achieved over the years has been just unbelievable.
Foster, who is also the President of the Berbice Cricket Board expressed gratitude to the Club’s sponsors and donors for their support over the years, which has enabled them to touch and change the lives of thousands.
The long serving Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club President told the audience that the Club would continue to strive for excellence in everything they do while challenging his members to remain disciplined, committed and steadfast.
Other speakers at the ceremony included Carl DeMattos of GT&T Cellink, Mr. Shri Khirodhar of Metro Office Supplies, Regional Education Officer Ms. Sharifan Bhajan, Rose Hall Town IMC Chairman Mr. Bhownauth Somrah, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Mr. Steve Ninvalle and Treasurer of the Berbice Cricket Board, Anil Beharry.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Conrad Plummer in the feature address praised the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for being a role model organisation while expressing his disappointment at the current state of club structures in Guyana.
Plummer spoke at length on the importance of discipline and dedication if one wants to be successful in sports and also stated that in today’s modern world an educational background was also equally important.
He noted that few sportsmen and women cater for a life after their involvement in sports; he challenged the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club members to educate themselves and also to be role models to others.
The long standing sports administrator stated that while Guyana has lots of natural talent, it often remains unfulfilled because of lack of commitment to working hard, to practice regularly and to always strive for excellence.
He called on the 2009 awardees to use their awards as stepping stones to greater successes.
National middle order batsman Assad Fudadin topped the list of Awardees winning the first division batsman of the Year Award and the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club 2009 Cricketer of the Year Award.
