Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, yesterday remanded a man who allegedly slapped his wife after she left the couple’s two-year-old daughter unattended at home.
The accused, Newbert Solomon, 37, of 187 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, is accused of assaulting and threatening his wife Anancia Payne, on March 29. He pleaded not guilty was unrepresented in court yesterday.
Solomon told the court that his wife left his young daughter unattended at home to go out with her friends. The man said that he called his wife and she used a number of derogatory remarks and then she hung up the phone.
Solomon said he was waiting at the gate with a friend when he saw his wife pass in a taxi.
The man said that the car stopped at his cousin’s home and his wife went into the house. Solomon said that he went to his cousin’s home and enquired of his wife where she had been.
The man claimed that an argument ensued, but he never threatened her. However, his wife said that Solomon pulled out a knife and tried to stab her. Payne said her husband was restrained by three of his female cousins.
The woman also told the court that it was not the first time her husband had tried to kill her. She recounted that she was hospitalized after he threw a drinking glass at her head.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford opposed bail. He told the court that women must feel secure whenever they are in relationships.
The magistrate remanded Solomon and he is expected to make another court appearance on April 9.
