NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Police in Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force shifted gear in the anti-narcotic strategy in a bid to create a ‘drought’ on the illicit drug market. A number of items were confiscated and one male who is suspected to be a drug dealer was detained.
Between 06:00 and 19:00 hours on Saturday, ranks, in two boats, swooped down on locations along the Berbice River and seized two boats and 12 outboard engines ranging from eight to 200 horse-power, mainly Yamaha, Marino and Mercury made.
They also seized a motor blower valued in excess of $150,000, three hydraulic bottle jacks and a metric scale.
The areas targeted were De Velde, Sand Hill, Haffett, Gaetroy and Tabatali, all between 55 and 80 miles up the Berbice River.
The matter is still under investigation but the owners must prove that the confiscated assets were not bought with dirty-money and produce all documents.
Based on information received, the two vessels seized are from De Velde and are reportedly used to ply the Berbice River, and even go as far as Venezuela.
Since none of the residents in those locations possess vehicles, it is suspected that the jacks are used for the compression of the ganja as it is prepared for the market. Some of the engines seized were outfitted with special propellers that are said to boost the speed.
Commander of Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force, Assistant Commissioner Steve Merai, said instead of only focusing on destroying fields used for marijuana cultivation, it was decided to go after the equipment used in the procedure and or those purchased with suspected ill-gotten gains.
In addition to known drug-areas, new ones like – Haffett, Gaetroy and Tabatali surfaced along the Berbice River. Saturday’s campaign was based on intelligence gathered and a list compiled of known cultivators. The teams swooped down on homes but met with mainly women and children who did not claim ownership of the items.
Some of these persons were cash crop farmers who did the crossover to cannabis sativa cultivation while others plant both the illicit drug and regular produce. Many of the homes in those locations are well equipped given the distance from civilisation.
