Police were yesterday still trying to track down two bandits who shot a Brazilian miner dead at Cuyuni on Wednesday before escaping with a quantity of gold.
A police release said that Francisco De Asis Da Rocho Muniz, 60, was shot in the abdomen and right shoulder and died before he could receive medical attention.
The release said Muniz and four other men were in a mining pit at Black Water Backdam, Cuyuni River at around 09:30 hrs when the gunmen struck.
According to police, Muniz was holding a ‘batel’ containing some raw gold, when a man, who was armed with a gun approached and discharged some rounds into the air.
The gunman then held the Brazilian at gunpoint and took away the ‘batel’ with the raw gold and escaped into the bushes.
It is alleged that another armed man then approached and discharged rounds at Da Rocho Muniz which hit him to his abdomen and right shoulder. The robbers then fled. Muniz was taken to the Bartica Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Relatives of the slain man said that Muniz, is survived by 12 children, two of whom reside in Guyana. Muniz has lived in Guyana for about nine years.
One of the slain man’s sons yesterday pleaded for local authorities to do all they could to track down his father’s killers.
The relatives said that efforts will be made to have the slain man buried in Brazil.
Several Brazilians have been slain within the past few years while working in Guyana’s mineral-rich interior.
